The Honorable Melissa M. Calhoun brings over 35 years of legal experience to the bench, with a distinguished background in both civil and criminal litigation. Her legal journey began in Illinois and has since spanned multiple states. She is currently licensed to practice in Georgia and previously held licenses in Illinois and Iowa. A graduate of Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Judge Calhoun immersed herself in courtroom practice early in her career, quickly gaining substantial trial experience that laid the foundation for her judicial service. Her extensive legal background, including significant trial experience, inspires confidence in her ability to serve with fairness and expertise.
Judge Calhoun, along with her husband, Wally Calhoun—a 32-year veteran of the 165th Airlift Wing—has called Effingham County home for over two decades. Their decision to settle in the area, drawn by its strong public school system, reflects a deep commitment to both community and family. This commitment is further demonstrated by Judge Calhoun's solo law practice in the county, which allows her to serve residents while remaining close to home.
Her public service includes an appointment as Juvenile Court Judge, a role she held until late 2023, where she was responsible for protecting the rights and welfare of minors. She also served briefly as Solicitor for Effingham County, stepping in during a period of transition to ensure continuity of operations.
Judge Calhoun's broad legal experience, strong sense of fairness, and deep roots in the community reflect her dedication to public service.
